General Membership Meeting - Note New Speaker and Zoom Link Information
Again, due to Covid-19 Public Gathering restrictions, our meeting will be held virtually. Our March meeting will, like prior meetings, be held on the second Tuesday of the month. This meeting will consist of a quick Club news update followed by an interesting speaker. Keep an eye on the calendar and look for future emails that will give information on the date and time as well as how to connect to the Zoom Meeting.
Guest Speaker Details:
Peter Hamel, District Interpreter for the Blue Ridge Parkway will be our speaker for the March 9th meeting of ODACT. Peter will discuss the history of the Parkway, what makes the Parkway special; and the geology , natural and cultural history and biodiversity of the Parkway.
Peter has be a Supervisory Park Ranger of the Blue Ridge Parkway , managing all of the Ranger-led activities for the first 106 miles of the Parkway, including 3 visitor centers, 2 historic farms and an old canal system. He has had an interesting career with the Park Service . He worked in Yellowstone National Park as a college intern, followed by the next 4 summers as a seasonal ranger. He worked in the Florida Everglades then moved to Alaska in 2002 to work in Denali National Park for 3 years. He worked 3 years at Kalmai National Park before returning to Yellowstone to experience a legendary Yellowstone winter.
Peter says working for the National Park Service has been tremendously rewarding as he gets to help care for, protect, and provide for the enjoyment of some of the most spectacular, valuable, and life-changing places on earth. He says “not only do I get paid to learn and play outside, I also get to share the wonder of these places with others to ensure they are passed onto the following generations.”
