November 23 (Friday) Washington Ditch, Great Dismal Swamp (B-4)

  • 23 Nov 2018

Art Ritter (804-980-6623, o2behiking@yahoo.com ) “Black Friday” the day after Thanksgiving?  No, it’s “Black Bear Friday!”  We’ll be heading to the Great Dismal Swamp, and hiking to Lake Drummond, one of two natural lakes in the Old Dominion, by way of the Washington Ditch Trail.  This is about five miles each way, out and back.  It is quite flat, and quite often is a good spot to see wildlife.  In that area, I’ve seen river otter, black bear, and a bobcat.  No guarantees, but one never knows, so I always carry binoculars.  At the least, I always see and hear birds while hiking in the Great Dismal Swamp.  Because of the driving distance, I’ll be looking by 7:00 for a 7:15 departure – we are meeting east of town; contact me for the location.  We will carpool, so bring money to reimburse your driver.  The carpool fee will be $40 per car split evenly, including the driver’s share, so plan on $10-20 depending on if we have full cars or not.  Contact Art for departure information.  Limited to 12 hikers, which will hopefully mean three cars.
