March 9 (Fri ) Off Trail Hike N. of Swift Creek Lake- Pocahontas State Park - Chesterfield (C/2)
Jeff Samuels (jefflsamuels@yahoo.com or 536-2671). A challenging off-trail hike north of Swift Creek Lake in an area recently set aside for hiking-only trail development. About 6+/- miles. Meander through the forest and along the scenic shoreline. Experienced hikers only. Must be comfortable hiking sustained off-trail on very uneven and steep terrain, scrambling over downed trees and across exposed roots and rocks, etc. Fun for those who like this type of adventure. No convenient bailout options. Bring water and snacks. Dress appropriately for hiking off-trail and for predicted weather conditions. Sturdy footwear (boots) recommended. Restrooms at start only. Park entrance is on Beach Road (Rt. 655) 4 miles west of Rt. 10 (Ironbridge Rd). Parking fee $5 without park pass. Meet in the big parking lot near the pool/picnic area.
