March 6 (Monday) Remote “Wild Side” Hike Pocahontas State Park – Chesterfield (B/2)

Jeff Samuels (jefflsamuels@yahoo.com or 536-2671). This may be the last opportunity to experience a remote wild area of the park's northeast section before it is touched by encroaching development. A somewhat challenging 12 mile hike with sustained off-trail uneven terrain during most of the second half. Venture along and across boulder strewn streams, through hardwood forests, and scenic overlooks along the north shoreline of Swift Creek Lake. See widespread evidence of recent beaver activity, perhaps even a triple dammed creek. A little park history, including the true spy thriller about 12 caches of buried top secret military documents that were unearthed by the FBI in 2003. See two small cemeteries and remnants of what may have been a still. Experienced hikers only - must be comfortable hiking sustained off trail on very uneven terrain. Important Consideration: There are no bailout options so you must be prepared to hike the entire 12 miles. Late afternoon return. Pack a lunch, snacks, and a minimum of two quarts of water. Restrooms at start only. $5 parking fee without park pass. Contact Jeff for meeting location, time, and questions.
