Jeff Samuels (796-7949 or jefflsamuels@yahoo.com). This may be your last opportunity to experience and savor a part of what remains of the "real" Pocahontas State Park. The Ride Center project to build up to 25 miles of new mountain-bike-only trails will soon reach remote segments of this relatively undeveloped, wild, NE section of the park. This somewhat challenging 8+ mile hike includes up to 3.5 miles off-trail, so be prepared for walking on some very uneven and steep terrain, over and around downed trees, through some very dense forest, and along and across up to 10 narrow streams (step over). This is not as difficult as it appears, however, but you must be comfortable hiking off-trail. See spectacular views of Swift Creek Lake from high ridges and from directly along the shoreline. Points of interest include two family cemeteries, a CCC-built dam, a well, and the remnants of what may possibly have been a still. Bring lunch and water. Restrooms at parking location only. Park entrance: Beach Road (Rt. 655) 4 miles west of Rt. 10 (Ironbridge Rd.). $5 parking fee without park pass. There is no need to contact Jeff unless you have questions. Meet in the big parking lot near the pool/picnic area at 8:50AM.
